Michael Salter

Michael Salter was born in Bristol, Connecticut. He received his MFA from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and currently serves as Associate Professor of Digital Art at the University of Oregon in Eugene. His work has been exhibited internationally, including solo shows at Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Winston Salem, North Carolina; Jeff Bailey Gallery, New York; BLK/MRKT Gallery, Los Angeles; as well as exhibitions at Think.21 Gallery, Brussels Belgium; and Shandong University of Art & Design, Jinan, China.

In North Carolina, he started a gallery with Bill Thelen (Lump) and upon arriving on the west coast opened a second site (Lump West) in Oregon. Michael has an upcoming show at Rice University in Texas, which will include 2D work as well as his monumental Styrobots: large-scale robots carefully constructed from repurposed Styrofoam.

ABOUT MICHAEL'S WORK
Michael Salter’s works combine the contemporary possibilities of digital composition with the established traditions of surrealism and pop. Taking well-known aspects of our environment, he makes them fresh through bold composition and uncanny juxtapositions. His work encourages us to reconsider the meaning and narratives implied by seemingly familiar objects and scenarios. In doing so, Michael cuts through the visual cacophony of our daily lives in order to provide moments of clarity – having fun along the way.
